Good afternoon! I apologize if this information is already on this site, but I was unable to find it.
We are creating a site for a non-profit organization which handles operations in several different regions of the US. For the purposes of events and such it seems in our best interest to create a sub-domain for each region, to keep things separate while bringing everyone to our main site initially. For validation purposes, is it necessary for us to purchase another license for each subdomain of our site? We’re going to have around 7 of them. That doesn’t seem right, but I’m unable to find more information about the options available to us.
Any help or advice on this topic would be most welcome.
Thanks and Happy New Year,
Richard
January 7, 2015 at 11:33 pm #178951Hey Richard,
In that case, one license is ok. One license can be applied in multisite installation as long the other sub site/domain is the same entity as where license is assigned to. In which it promote the same and single site.
In your case, you would need to purchase a unique license for each client as a license is for a single use for one entity and no parts of the one license can be shared or resold or re-used by another party or client.
Thanks.
January 8, 2015 at 10:16 am #179266Thank you! That’s a relief. How should we go about validating our X-Theme install on each subdomain? They’re not really clients, but sections of our same website for the different areas we manage. They don’t seem to be activating automatically, and when I enter the API Key from the main directory, it says “Unauthorized URL for API Key”. Without purchasing further licenses, I don’t see a way to link the subdomains to the root domain which we already purchased.
Any ideas? Or am I not understanding you correctly?
Thanks for your help.
January 8, 2015 at 4:35 pm #179487Hi Richard,
Sorry if there is any cofusion. Licenses work on multisites or even multiple isntalls as long as they are on the same domain. For example http://www.yourdomain.com/region1 to http://www.yourdomain.com/region7 will work, however region1.yourdomain.com will not work and will require separate licenses for each if you are doing separate installs.
You would need to do a WordPress multisite install and validate on the main domain meaning set the API key for that domain. In a multisite install you can set it to use folders (www.yourdomain.com/region1) or subdomains (region1.yourdomain.com) the main domain controls the theme settings accross all sites so if you validate there it gets passed down to all sites within the multisite network.
Hope this helps clear things up. Thanks!

February 12, 2015 at 2:55 pm #205263Just to clarify, separate licenses will have to be purchased when using sub-domains. If the multi-site is setup in a folder then just one license is required. If the multi-site is setup this way, each folder will have the x theme installed and it will be customizable as if it’s a new site, correct?
February 12, 2015 at 3:48 pm #205321Our multisite was setup for sub domain use. It looks like we will not be able to revert it as folder directory. We would like to use the x-theme to create industry specific samples/templates of websites for companies to purchase. We would buy licenses for each company who would be using X. We would like to avoid paying for extra licenses by showcasing sample sites on our site. From your explanation above, it sounds like this is not possible.
February 13, 2015 at 7:13 am #205839Hey There,
It is not possible but it’s also not really a problem. The verification just ensures automatic updates. You also can manually update everything and use all the features by manually installing the extensions which come with the x_package.zip so the only thing that won’t work are the automatic updates. If you want them on all pages you could regenerate the API key for each sub domain every few month and go through all the sub domains and make an update and then revert it back to the root domain.
February 13, 2015 at 11:15 am #205957Ok. Perfect. That will work. Thanks!

Multi installations will need more than one license if they are different unique websites. Only if it’s one website that shares content / links and everything else then one license will be sufficient. If you link several top level domains to another domain that’s no problem at all as long as they are all linking to the same installation. Let me know if you need anything else.
October 19, 2015 at 6:00 am #630900Hello,
Also related to sub domains.
I have made a site temporarily at a sub domain (for building the site). Now that it is finished I plan to move it to the original domain. Will Theme X work after I have moved it? I plan to use a backup thru Akeeba of the site. Then restore the site on the original domain.
My site now:
mysite.originaldomain.noWill move to:
originaldomain.noDont know if this made sense, but very glad if you could advise me..
October 19, 2015 at 6:17 am #630921Hi there,
When you’re done developing your site you need to revoke API generated with
mysite.originaldomain.no
and regenerate it withoriginaldomain.no
.Thanks.
