Hi,
i try to figure out how you did this in your example: http://theme.co/x/demo/icon/3/blog/ – please help. In my local-installation with all the demostuff you described it doesn’t show.

what exactly is different on your local installation? This is an Icon blog overview page with a sidebar that is using a Recent Post widget and some other default widgets on the right side. Other than that the post formats got certain background colors which you can set in the Customizer but when you download the Customizer demo content you already got them. The only thing you need to do is to create a Blog page and go to Settings > Reading and set a static page -> assign the Posts page to the Blog page.

I ve done everything as described. Also everything works fine, except this detail that the sidebar the images doesn’t show. only the titles from recent posts are shown. It is the normal recent-post widget, nothing special.

Sorry for the confusion. This is using one of our shortcodes in a text widget to achieve this look in the sidebar. Try the following out in a Text Widget:
[recent_posts count="3" orientation="vertical"]
