To achieve this you will need to have a Child Theme installed on your theme.

The code is working perfectly. There are 3 posts that displays on top of you recent post items though. The reason for that is that you have set those 3 posts as sticky post.

Please keep in mind that sticky posts will always display first regardless of the date. You need to unset the sticky post and you will see a big changes in the post carousel.
