BildrethParticipantHi There!
I’m new to having a website and have decided to buy hosting space from GoDaddy, a domain name, and Decided to use X as my theme for my site. [version 4.5 of WordPress is the version I now have installed i believe]
I have been playing with the dashboard functions, also with the customize panel, experimenting and trying to build a site from scratch without knowing where to get the best help with simple things… these two devices I believe are wordpress related rather than X related options to customize. Please forgive my bewilderment.
http://www.meschene.com is my site URL, at the moment it’s just me building a portfolio of my work on 1 page with links to various images. I have worked some things out – and have gotten so far with it .. but could really do with sitting back and watching a nice video tutorial on how things work because i feel i don’t have the fundamentals. Consequently I’m going round in circles feeling a bit weary.
For example – it must be very simple to add a separate page to be my ‘shop front’, separate from my portfolio and a button to guide one to it, or am I confused and each time i click a link to an image i actually am going to a separate page? .. it must be also simple to have the big white boxes which link to my images re sized or transparent, to change the size & color of one sentence on the front page without affecting text relating to the images. I want ‘Portfolio’ to be white, but not make the text next to the images white because the background is white so it becomes unreadable, my solution was to make a grey which is visible on the front page and also nect to the selected product image. I managed to make a word hyperlink to a friends site once , but cannot do it anymore no matter how much i go round and round…. .. I’m a bit confused…
also someone told me they could easily go on and ‘add a menu’ – how can I stop that ?
Where should I best be looking to solve issues like these?
Thanks
Bildreth.

ChristopherModeratorHi there,
Thanks for writing in !
You can find all X’s tutorials here : https://community.theme.co/kb/
I recommend you to start with importing demo content, demo content pages gives you idea and then you can create your own pages, please see https://community.theme.co/kb/demo-contentTo add menu to wordpress page, check this link : https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Menu_User_Guide
I’m sorry but I don’t know what you’re trying to achieve in regards with following :
it must be also simple to have the big white boxes which link to my images re sized or transparent, to change the size & color of one sentence on the front page without affecting text relating to the images. I want โPortfolioโ to be white, but not make the text next to the images white because the background is white so it becomes unreadable, my solution was to make a grey which is visible on the front page and also nect to the selected product image.
If you wouldn’t mind providing us with a little more clarification on what it is you’re wanting to do (a link to a similar example site would be very helpful, or perhaps some screenshots), we’ll be happy to provide you with a response once we have a better understanding of the situation.
Hope it helps.

BildrethParticipantHi,
Thanks for getting back in touch, I think one of the issues I had was finding the knowledge base – scrolling down through lots of information links related to knowledge – but the jargon was waaay past me … like – what does that even mean ?
me being a slow but thorough learner, I’m reading all the links and then went back after feeling that the knowledge base was too technically ahead of me – and then – I realised when I went back, If I had only scrolled further down instead of trying to read everything I couldn’t understand – the training section is at the bottom of the Knowledge base page!
I will send some screenshots of the issue which you found unclear, if I do not figure it out now that I know about the knowledge base training section. Good to know there’s a person I can shout for if I do really get stuck again.
Thanks again ๐

BenRyan.meParticipantHey Bildreth,
I just had a quick look at your site to see how it was coming along and if I could do anything to help answer your question. I’d be keen to also check out your further clarification once you send it through.
One thing I did notice when I jumped on your site was the file size of the images. As you are in the early stages I wanted to jump in and let you know about a websites speed optimisation. A speedy site will help you rank better in Google once your site is up and running and SEO is good.
One of the easiest ways to save the page load time on your site is image optimisation. This basically covers 2 main things, the size of the image viewed on the page, and the file format. Where possible I much prefer to use PNG however in certain cases JPG is a much better option. For example, The 1st image on http://www.meschene.com/uncategorized/75/ is a PNG file (dimensions 1920px by 1080px) with a file size of 954KB. By changing this to a JPG file you can reduce the file size to 86KB (91% saving).
I have attached a version of that image in JPG format with a reduced file size and would be happy to show you how I achieved that size if you like.
Cheers and good luck ๐
