Hi,
Obviously I have not updated for quite a while. Can you tell me if I will encounter problems and how to go about updating?
Thanks : )March 21, 2017 at 11:54 pm #1415824Hello There,
Thanks for writing in!
You can refer our theme and plugin update guide:

March 22, 2017 at 12:15 am #1415829Hi,
I already read that but I don’t think it tells me if I am likely to encounter problems updating from such an old version (i.e. from 2.4.0 to the latest version).
Thanks.March 22, 2017 at 9:48 am #1416286Hey There,
Thanks for writing in!
Let’s install fresh copy of WordPress and X with everything up to date. You can use the Child Theme from beginning if you think you might need some out of the box customization.
Let us know if we can help with anything else.
March 22, 2017 at 9:56 am #1416296I’m sorry but I don’t understand. I have a website that is developed in 2.4.0 and I want to update it to the latest version of X. I developed it from a demo originally and customized it for my needs. I don’t have a child theme for it and when I read about child themes it seems like I would have needed v 3.2.1.
Please explain how I might go about what you suggested above.
Thanks.
March 22, 2017 at 9:20 pm #1417111Hi There,
Updating from 2.4.0 to the latest version (4.6.4) is not easy, yes you will encounter issues. And you wont just be updating the theme but the WordPress itself, you might also need to update the PHP and MySQL version on your server.
Assuming there is no custom development involve on your site, which is more likely because you mentioned you don’t a child theme.
So in this case its more practical if you setup a development server. On that environment install the latest WordPress (4.7.3), install the latest X|Theme (4.6.4), also install a Child Theme, install the necessary plugins/extensions. And then start rebuilding your pages in Cornerstone, if you only have a handful of pages.
You should able to rebuild your pages in Cornerstone in no time if you already familiar of using it. But if not, then consider this as learning curve. Yes it will take time, and so does updating an old site.
This way your current/old site lives until you finish the updated site. When the time comes you will be deleting that old site and replace it with the updated site by following the migration guide here: https://community.theme.co/kb/cornerstone-migration/
You can refer to this page: https://community.theme.co/kb/version-compatibility/ for the latest versions of X, and Cornerstone and the version of plugins/extensions that it supports.
Thanks.
March 22, 2017 at 10:01 pm #1417134So the whole point of this thread is that I have customized my original 2.4.0 parent theme and I want to keep that customization after the update. Can you please tell me how to do that without re-creating the whole site?
(My PHP, wprdpress and MySQL are all updated).
Thanks very much.
March 23, 2017 at 2:44 am #1417313Hi there,
In that case, I strongly recommend you to create a separate staging site (https://community.theme.co/kb/cornerstone-migration/) then update your X theme & Plugins there and test.
If your customizations are done directly to your child theme, you can simply move a copy of your child theme directory to your Themes (/wp-content/themes/) and then activate it.
If everything works, then you can migrate to your live server using the same steps.
Thanks!
