Hello,
I am trying to set up a multisite installation to build demonstration sites for different types of customer (eCommerce, bar/restaurant, etc.). I have created a networked WP install using subfolders, rather than sub-domains. Having installed the X theme I can’t get any of the extensions/plugins to show up/work in the main or sub-sites.
I cannot find comprehensive useful cases in the Knowledge Base.
Question: do you have best practice advice on the sequence for theme installation, API key validation and extension/plugin installation that works in the above case?
Thanks, Mike

A multi-site installation is a bit more tricky than having a one site installation. The first thing would be to install the theme in your Network overview settings. Then activate the theme network wide.. Once you’ve done that I would recommend downloading the whole X themeforest package. In there you will have all extensions and under /framework/plugins/ you have all additional plugins. You can install all of the manually in your Network panel and then activate them on all sites at once. As for the API key / Product verification. This depends on if your Website runs on subdomains for each multi site installation or just directories. If directories then you can manually enter the same API key on all of your installations. The normal rule is 1 license per Website so in a normal use scenario (not demos) you would need 1 license per multi site. That’s why you have to enter them manually and they can’t be subdomains.
Hope that helps!
January 13, 2015 at 8:59 am #182022Thanks. I’ve cleared out the install and reinstalled X using the Network admin level install. But I’m still confused by the status and source for your extensions and plugins. Your Installation video in the knowledge base shows the install will prompt for the installation of the following plugins: Force Regenerate Thumbnails, X-Shortcodes, Contact Form 7, Slider Revolution and Visual Composer. It then goes on to show these as appearing under Plugins once the theme is installed so you can activate them all from the plugins menu. However, this doesn’t happen in my install and you seem to be telling me to install manually from the X package download. No problem doing this but it seems your tutorial is out of date? Could you clarify?
Also, I previously installed the X-shorcode extension from the extensions page on your site; it installed but then disappeared from the extensions page on your site. I tried another extension (Under Construction) – this installed but did not disappear from the extensions page on your site. Instead is changed to show the status as installed. Which behaviour is correct? Is there bug with the handling of X-shortcode extension install?
Finally, are there issues/implications around whether to install exertions and plugins at the network or sub-site level in a network scenario?
I assume you do not have any best practice tutorials for multisite network installations? Could you confirm? If such a tutorial does exist on your site, I could refer to that and save you the support call! 🙂
January 13, 2015 at 9:09 am #182030Also…
I have just installed X-Shortcodes under the Network Admin…Plugin menu and network activated, but does not show up under Plugins on any of the subordinate sites and I can’t add any plugins under any site individually.
January 13, 2015 at 9:21 am #182035P.S. I have network deactivated X-Shortcodes plugin and now it appears under each site as Activated!
Really confused!
January 13, 2015 at 11:45 pm #182477Hi,
In that case, would you mind providing us with login credentials so we can take a closer look? To do this, you can make a post with the following info:
– Link to your site
– WordPress Admin username / password
– FTP credentialsDon’t forget to select Set as private reply. This ensures your information is only visible to our staff.

First, plugins like visual composer, x shortcode, and rev. slider are no longer appear as wordress’s site wide notice when the theme is activated (as far as I tested). They are now available under Admin > Addons > Extensions. Since this is only possible with site admin (not network admin), then you could install them from your selected site where API Key is validated. Or manually upload them.
X Shortcode, if present or installed, it will then be activated too from the site where X theme is active (automatically). But once the theme is deactivated from the current site, then X shortcode will be deactivated too. If your plugins are network activated then it will be active for all sites with no activation needed from each, and thus, network activated plugins will not be available from each site’s plugin lists.
X shortcode should be activated where X theme is present only (use network activate if you will use X theme for all of your sites).
And yes, we don’t have walk through for multi site installation. But there is should be no big difference and from single site installation. All you have to note is that network and site admin has different control over theme and plugins. Network activate for plugins makes the plugin active network wide(globally), while theme’s network activate will not make the theme active, but make it available for each site only.
I’ll be glad to guide you if there are more confusing setup about multi-site and x theme 🙂
Cheers!
January 15, 2015 at 8:06 am #183662To summarise, you seem to be advocating that, in my networked site scenario, extensions/plugins should be installed at the site level but can be activated at the network level. Correct?

Yes, correct. You can activate your plugins per site, or network activate them (global, which will remove them from the plugin lists of each your site).
Could you try refreshing your update lists more frequently while doing the installation? It looks like it fails to connect to your own host because accessing that link through browser downloads the correct/working zip package.
With that issue, you can do manual upload . Or check this https://theme.co/x/member/forums/topic/release-notes-x-v3-1-1-x-shortcodes-v2-6-1/ (under Additional Notes).
Thanks!
