Hi there,
Maybe there is confusion between API Key and License 🙂
A license should be used for each unique project regardless of single-site or multisite. If your 5 sites are integrated part of your main site, then, a single license is okay. If your 5 sites are not related to each other or to the main site, then, multiple licenses is required. A single license should be applied to a single project only.
And now about the API Key, it’s not a license, but just a way to enable automatic update for single installation/system. Multi-site is considered a single system with single update process because it’s still one installation, it’s the same to a single site. A single site requires single API Key to enable automatic update, and a multi-site requires single API Key too, but should be validated for the main site only.
If you have one project with sub-domain, but your sub-domain is a separate installation, then you’ll need another API key. But you can only have one API Key per license, so the solution is manual update or revoke/generate API key. Again, it’s just to enable automatic updates, and it only happens occasionally.
Thanks 🙂
May 19, 2016 at 10:34 am #999613I am sorry to jump in, but it is just not clear how you work on the development site,or even activate the development site without closing down your live site. I went to my “management” page on my account and there is no development license listed as shown in several of the images on your suggestions. Where do I get the development license number?
Could you put a clear set of directions on how to implement both a live and development site as shown in your images?

Validate live environment first and then you’ll see an option to add a development environment (see screenshot).
Hope that helps.
