This is the first time ever in my life, I’ve purchased a wordpress theme. I’ve three silly doubts. I already searched themeforest.net threads but they gave conflicting answers, therefore asking here.

Q1. Do I need to purchase new license for every subdomain (meant for my own use)?
    for example
    mrunal.org (main blog)
forum.mrunal.org (where I aim to install bbpress)
pix.mrunal.org (Where I aim to host pictures)
exam.mrunal.org (Where I aim to install GMAT like question platform)

I assure you, all these subdomain websites are for my own use.
    I’m *not* renting/selling subdomain to others third-parties.
I’ll own and administer all of them myself.
On themeforest, some people say “YES”, some say “NO”. Therefore need clarification.

Q2. For localhost offline testing & tweaking, I aim to install this theme on “SERVERPRESS” (it’s similar to that XAMPP thing). So, do I need to buy additional license for offline testing?

I’ve this doubt because on themeforest, a person said, I’ve to buy separate license (for localhost) once I make the offline theme “LIVE”! (which is ridiculous by the way).
But since I’m new to this game, Therefore, I need official word from the owners. Don’t want to mess up my license code.

Q3. In the videogames, there is something like DRM-activation, where game keeps in touch with official server for authentication so pirate game cannot be played. So, how can a person test a “premium” theme in offline mode, because it cannot authenticate the code with official site? I’ve this doubt because I’ve never installed any premium theme on my localhost serverpress.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Mrunal,

    1) You can use don’t need to purchase multiple license for same domain as you’re the only user for all of them. mrunal.org
    forum.mrunal.org
    pix.mrunal.org
    exam.mrunal.org

If you want to use X theme in another domain, e.g: http://mrunalexample.com then you need another license.

    2) No need of another purchase for localhost testing.

    3) No, TF themes aren’t like DRM Videogames. You can use them localhost without update. Some theme needs Purchase code to activate them, well without you can use them in your local. When you get your site online, you only need license.

Hi and thanks for the awesome work, loving X so far !
Not sure if I’m supposed to post here but I have a question related to this thread.

Was wondering how to go about mrunal’s second question ?
I activated my API key for my website ‘http://anthonyesebag.com’ but coudldn’t activate again for ‘localhost’ where I have a copy of my website – w/ MAMP – on which I would like to work before pushing it live.

“2) No need of another purchase for localhost testing.”

Does this mean we can use the theme but not activate and therefore have to do manual updates ?
Is there a way to ‘activate’ again with same API key ?

    Thanks in advance,
    Anthony

    Hi Anthony,

I’m afraid not. Each key can only be used once. If you have separate environments, you’ll need to either update manually, or purchase another license for the convenience. We can only validate each license with a single site. Thanks for understanding, take care!

    Hi,

I’ve got a similar problem, I want to install on localhost/mydomain.com because it’s much faster to develop/test locally. However, I can’t install the license, and, since version 3, there’s a lot of new features that can only be used with an installed license.

How do we solve this problem?

    Thanks,
    Mark

    Hey There,

You can remove and add new API keys at any time. So removing the API key for your main site while working on the development site and generating one of it is no problem. Only the automatic updates will be shut off on the main site till you reenable the API key for it.

I just tested with localhost/mydomain.com and it reverts to “localhost”. The API Key does work!!

    Hi guys,

Very new to this and all the terminology – so please excuse my ignorance – been looking at a lot of sites built with X in the thread showcasing sites and your work on the theme is awesome.

I think the info in the thread above answers my question but I would like to clarify.

I am keen to attempt building a new site for our restaurant website. The original site was built and maintained by the same company that will hosts the site. I have told them that we want to develop our own new site using wordpress and they have set up a development site for us on a sub domain.

Before I really get stuck in I would just like to check with you guys if the license that I have used for the sub domain will still be valid for the proper site once I am ready.

I asked the host company the same question and this was the response I got from them:
” I’m not sure in your case, but usually you can use the licensed themes on sub-domains under the same WordPress installation. It is not an entirely different domain, but a sub-domain, so best would be to check with the Theme provider what their terms are.”

Excuse my ignorance but I need start somewhere!
Thanks in advance for the help!

    Hi There,

Everything was stated above I believe. I want to precise on your case – You can use a license on a single live site since you have to validate the purchase key for a domain. So you won’t be able to validate it for more than one domain (or subdomain) at once. That means you can work on a staging site and validate the API key for that. When you are ready to go for live site, just revoke the key for staging site and use on your live site. That’s it.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers!

Is this still the best option for working with X-theme locally (localhost) and sub-domains?
There has to be / should be an easier solution by now.

My objective is to setup multiple blogs on my website, following the excellent example of Buffer.

    For example they have:

    open.buffer.com
    blog.buffer.com
    overflow.buffer.com

You (X Staff) state in your first reply to Mrunal that this is possible without multiple licences, so my question is how do I actually go about setting up my version of that?

Is there a KB article on it?

    Thanks

    Hi there,

Thanks for writing in. Sorry if there is any confusion. Licenses work on multisites or even multiple installs as long as they are on the same domain. For example http://www.yourdomain.com/region1 to http://www.yourdomain.com/region7 will work, however region1.yourdomain.com will not work and will require separate licenses for each if you are doing separate installs.

You would need to do a WordPress multisite install and validate on the main domain meaning set the API key for that domain. In a multisite install you can set it to use folders (www.yourdomain.com/region1) or subdomains (region1.yourdomain.com) the main domain controls the theme settings accross all sites so if you validate there it gets passed down to all sites within the multisite network.

Hope this helps clear things up. Thanks!

    Hi,

now I am a little confused:
Here in this post #89980 I understand, that only one licence is needed for multiple subdomains in one domain.

Here in this post #791434 I understand, that it is not possible to go with one licence for multiple subdomains in one domain.

I would conclude, that I can go with one purchased licence for:
    mydomain.com (api key),
    one.mydomain.com,
    two.mydomain.com,
    three.mydomain.com.
    … .mydomain.com

Please be so kind and make clear, if this is correct.
Or do I need for everything else then mydomain.com a seperate licence?

I have read at envato and also here so much about it, but finally I am not sure in this.

    Thanks in advance.
