Hello Peter,
Now that you have turn off the plugin, can you please try adding a new sidebar via Appearance > Sidebars. Then add the widget content of that sidebar via Appearance > Widgets. Do let us know how this goes.
Always,
XNovember 22, 2015 at 10:26 pm #675463Mmm … the Public profile doesn’t seem to register that I just wrote back.
I’ll repeat. When I turn off the ‘Custom Sidebars plugin’, I have no option to create a new sidebar.
November 22, 2015 at 10:37 pm #675465okay. sorry. didn’t see there was a ‘Page 2’ thing on the right.
yep. no go.

This is what I put into Appearance – Sidebars

And this is what I put into the functions.php file, the original string of code + the new slider (created in Appearance – Sliders)

Hey. Thanks for this. I’m learning SO MUCH. I know it’s outside the standard thing, or at least that’s what I perceived before, but You all are, as usual, above the line.
Always,
Me
November 22, 2015 at 10:41 pm #675470This reply has been marked as private.November 22, 2015 at 10:47 pm #675478Ah. No. I set BuddyPress to a *secondary blog*, which is mythica.intothemythica.com (sub-site).
I’ve just started moving it back over. It was an early design decision. * Regardless *, I implemented the code as shown in the screenshots in my last post.
I even (defying all logic) changed the code once again using the ‘Testslider’ parameter, as if it would take, knowing full-well that the Buddypress was on mythica.intothemythica.com rather than intothemythica.com (though i’m changing it over as soon as I learn how without destroying my member/activity feed).
Both (intothemythica.com) and sub-site (mythica.intothemythica.com) use the Child template.
I adjusted the functions.php file in the Child template using the info given through Appearance-Sidebars yet to no avail.
????
Do you have SFTP login info? I’m sure I put it in this thread.
November 22, 2015 at 11:02 pm #675484Hello Peter,
Thank you for the clarification.
For the sidebar to show, please select Layout with Sidebar on the customizer. See screenshot below:Hope this helps.
November 22, 2015 at 11:05 pm #675485Nope.

While we’re at it, how do I get a sidebar on both sides?
Assuming this is figured out. 🙂
November 22, 2015 at 11:08 pm #675490HA-HA!!!!!
VICTORY!!!
Man, God is in the details and all that.
I remembered that we’d switched the code in the functions.php file to the ‘test’ one that was created on the main intothemythica.com site and switched it over to the sidebar from mythica.intothemythica.com
YAY!!!!!!!
Um …. so …. like … since we’re at it … can I get one on the other side?
I mean, we’ve gone this far. You know, micro-commitments and all that.
Am I asking too much?
Either way, thank thank thank thank!!!
Learning so much.
With this understanding, when I shift the BuddyPress back over to the main site; it’s just yum.
November 22, 2015 at 11:15 pm #675493Hi there,
X supports only one sidebar, what you’re trying to achieve requires custom development which would be outside the scope of our support.
Thanks for your understanding.
November 22, 2015 at 11:29 pm #675510Actually, is okay. You all have done so much already. As far as I understand it, the BuddyPress thing is outside the X-Theme customization of the forum? If True, above and beyond the call of duty. Thanks. If not True or is okay, would love info on how to make it happen.
However, not attached. “Above and beyond” good customer service.
Is question about theme though. X-related. Am understanding how BuddyPress functions WITHIN the context of the X-Theme.
Question – So, I thought * normally * (non X-Theme), BP customizations are not done in a Child theme with functions.php. My understanding was that they were done on the SFTP side, in the plugins folder.
Is this correct? Is this specific to X? This would suggest that I do such customizations always in the functions.php zone and just leave the BP stuff in my SFTP zone and work within X.
Yes?
So in this case, there must be a way to customize the Activity feed on the page so that I get sidebars on either side; that looks good on an iPad as well. Something centered. This is the reason I wanted to get the Activity feed going across the whole length of the screen to begin with; to have more space.
I’m confused as to how this functions vis a vis the layout; the menu (top, left, fixed, etc.); what will create the space, and how that plays out in the mobile.
It would be great to understand this. Really. If asking too much it’s totally fine. I’m * very * appreciative. The designer in me just aches for everything being centered and functional and the whole “customization within the functions.php’ as compared to in BP functions on the SFTP is a bit confusing and I wish to understand.
That way, I can work with BP customization more clearly in terms of X-Theme, and, if i’m asking things beyond the scope and receiving a graciousness of Knowledge (*bows*); I can either learn it myself or ask WPMUDEV.
Is thank so much.
November 22, 2015 at 11:30 pm #675511Just read your bit. I was wording and re-wording my statement to (a) show appreciation and respect, and (b) figure out as much as I could that was within the scope of X support.
Thank You so very very very much. Truly. Like I said, if what i’m asking about BP is outside the scope, really-truly thank.
Would it be improper to have my question regarding how customizations work relative to BP in the functions.php vs. the plugin folder?
November 22, 2015 at 11:43 pm #675523Hello Peter,
You’re very much welcome. It is our great pleasure to help.
It depends on the customization because it is case to case basis. Since what we did above is layout it is ok to do it in functions.php file. It would be better if you can consult a web developer to help you achieve multiple sidebars. This is so he can check the best approach in customization.Always,
XNovember 23, 2015 at 12:22 am #675562You have been most kind, in all respects. Again, my deep thanks.
If I may ask one last thing, why is the option to have Sidebar Left, Content Right prevented from working in the Customizer?
Does it have to do with the code in the functions.php file?
November 23, 2015 at 12:34 am #675570Hello Peter,
By design, to use sidebar we have to set Global Layout > Content Left, Sidebar Right or Sidebar Left, Content Right instead of fullwidth. When it is set to fullwidth, the sidebar will not work even if you set it in templates or you use templates with sidebar.
If this doesn’t answer you question, please clarify.November 23, 2015 at 12:47 am #675577Sidebar Left, Content Right doesn’t change the layout. I was just wondering why
