Hi,
I have assigned Categories to my Portfolio items, and would like to generate a sidebar index like this:
Portfolio items directory
– Category A (3)
– Category B (21)
– Category C (10)
– …Each of these Category names (w/ #items) in the index would link to an archive page of Portfolio Items labeled with that Category, and retain the sidebar index.
I can think of three strategies to do this, but the two I have tried turned up as dead ends:
Option 1. There is a widget called “Category” that is described as “A list of dropdown categories”. It has an option to “show post counts”. This would work for me if I could use it with the Portfolio type posts… but it only works with Blog posts. Can I tweak it to work for Portfolio items?
Option 2. The “Tag cloud” widget allows me to select the “Portfolio Category” taxonomy to produce a tag cloud with the names of my categories. But it won’t list the number of items visually, though this number does appear in the link title as “N topics). And then when you click on the link, it takes you to an Archive page for that Portfolio Category that I don’t know where to edit/control. If this option were the right one, I would want the look to be consistent with the main Portfolio Page as currently configured (I’m using Template-Layout-Portfolio).
Option 3. Perhaps I can repurpose the category filter at the top of the page to display as a list to filter the elements on the side. It would have to include the number of portfolio items… Now, this tweak I have no idea how to do.
Which of these options is best to achieve the result I want? Let me know if you would like to see my original mockups for the site to have a better idea of what I’m trying to achieve.
Thanks in advance,
Irene

Thanks for writing.
Sorry for having this issue as this is not a feature offered by X.
It can be achieved with the options you mentioned above, but it would take more work and testing when all you want is to have a category widget for custom post type. The easiest way for you is to use a third party plugin for this, where it provides similar function of post category widget but gives you an option to select a custom taxonomy.
You might want to try any of these plugin
http://wordpress.org/plugins/list-custom-taxonomy-widget/
http://wordpress.org/plugins/gd-taxonomies-tools/
Please understand also that we cannot support any third party plugin, so you have to explore a bit more. But I believe there are many wordpress plugin that offers a solution for this.
Hope that helps.
Cheers

Out of the box, WordPress is not secure. You have to make extra steps to harden it. Please see http://codex.wordpress.org/Hardening_WordPress. You might also want to try https://wordpress.org/plugins/better-wp-security/
Thanks.
