Hi,
I realise we can change the fonts to use Google Fonts, and we can forcefully override the fallbacks using our own Stylesheet, or altering the child, however…
Helvetica Neue and Helvetica are poor choices as default fallback fonts, and here is why:

This is just one example of MANY references as to why Helvetica (which is a print font) should not be used for web.
Helvetica Neue is better, but 10’s of 10000’s (maybe millions) of people cannot see these fonts rendered on their Windows machines. It doesn’t come with Windows and would need to be purchased.
So then it falls back to Arial. (ugly old Arial).
Please consider changing the fallbacks, since at least 50% (probably more) of all internet users can’t see the Helvetica fonts. Arial is a pig ugly dog of a font 😉
I know it comes down to opinion in some ways, so I won’t try suggesting what fallbacks you might change to, but for example, Tahoma is installed on over 90% of all Windows AND Macs, and there are others, like Trebuchet MS, Georgia which are highly cross platform distributed and much nicer.
Cheers
Guy
February 25, 2015 at 2:12 pm #215207Hi Guy,
Thank you for your suggestion! There shouldn’t be an issue about the font we are using, since we can freely use whatever fonts we want by activating the Custom Fonts under the Typography tab on the Customizer. Another popular font right now is the “Lato”.
Cheers!
February 26, 2015 at 6:38 am #215734Thanks, those are all Google fonts (I use them), but a good fallback choice then is sans-serif and serif (if you use a serif font).
Anyway, just a thought, since Helvetica and its webfont cousin Neue are illegible to Windows users unless they own a commercial licence to the font.

Yes, serifs are good and reliable fonts that is why it is one of the default font in X font-family.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Cheers!
