Wordpress Version: 3.9.1Hey guys. I’m pretty confused as to how so many X sites seem to be utilizing unlimited widgets at the top of the page without having to hit that collapsing plus sign. My page setup just has a header image, navbar, and then goes right into my content (posts). I understand how to use widgets on my sidebar and at the footer, but say – for example – I want to have my site laid out as…
HEADER
NAVBAR
THREE RECENT POSTS GOING HORIZONTALLY
THEN MY INDIVIDUAL POSTSI don’t understand how people are doing this, and I’ve browsed through the knowledge base and video tutorials. Sorry if this is something that’s clearly addressed. I can’t seem to find it.
May 29, 2014 at 12:12 pm #49915Hi Chris,
I’m not sure what you mean. Do you have examples of other sites? This would take some custom coding, and nothing particular comes to mind.
Many sites have a custom home page. This is done by creating a page, and assigning it as the static home page under Visual Composer. The only issue is you can’t have your normal blog posts appear below this.
You might want to check out the new Ethos stack as well. (X 2.0) It has a featured posts carousel you might like.
May 29, 2014 at 2:26 pm #50002You answered my question. I didn’t know that you could assign a page as the static home page. Upon attempting this, I’m now having some trouble clearing out the template. I’m trying to just have it blank – no container, header, or footer – so that I can use the Visual Composer to start from scratch. I don’t even want the background I’m currently using. Even when I set it to blank everything, there’s still a white content area (if that’s the right term).

I published it so that you guys can see what I mean. I unchecked the ‘Show Sharing Buttons’ option, and I’m still getting them. I’m assuming there’s no way to get rid of the white area because that’s where the elements are placed, in which case I’d like to change the background color to black. Like I said…I don’t even want the yellow splatter background that I’m using for the rest of the website. Is there a way to have the formatting of this page be different from the rest of the site?
All I want to do is have a simple welcome page. I was thinking something along the lines of a revolution slider and a click here to enter type of thing.
Thanks for your help 🙂
EDIT: I figured out how to change the background. *facepalm* I still need to know how to remove those share icons and change the color of that white bar to black if possible.
EDIT NUMERO DOS: Okay, I’m sorry guys. I got those share buttons to go away. I always manage to figure things out after I buckle and ask, which means I’m underestimating myself and buckling too soon. Sorry for the unnecessary questions.
May 29, 2014 at 9:55 pm #50211Great to hear that Chris! No problem, just let us know if you have any problem 🙂
May 29, 2014 at 10:07 pm #50215Since you mentioned it, I’m having some trouble with white spaces between the elements I utilize. I used the Gap element, followed by an image element. On both of them, I set the background to black. Why am I getting these white bars, and how can I remove them?

EDIT: Took care of the spaces. Now I’m trying to figure out how to center the logo that I’ve placed. It seems like the page is formatted as if it has a sidebar, but it doesn’t. When I hit full width, it brings back my container, header, and footer. If there’s no option for full width without re-adding those things, then how to I get this page centered?
May 30, 2014 at 3:26 pm #50470Hi Chris,
You can center the image by added
aligncenter
as a custom class. You can do this in Visual Composer by editing the image element, or through theclass
attribute of the shortcode.May 30, 2014 at 3:48 pm #50486That worked 🙂
New question. How can I add my navbar without using a template that includes the header?
May 31, 2014 at 7:50 pm #50746Hi Chris,
Creating navbar without including header. Two option :
1. You can create a content band with Widget Area shortode, where you can define your custom menu, or static menu. (you will then have to style it to make it look nice)
2. Template customization. Directly edit/remove your header and just leave its navbar, or move its navbar.Either one, you may contact a developer to finish the work. This customization may take long as expected due to many issue it may cause or feature needed.
Thank you.
