I’ve read the previous thread on Favicon, in particular Rue Nel’s reply on Feb 24, 2016. Rue Nel asked users to start a new thread as that one was getting too long.
Please let me know if I understand the steps correctly:
Just upload 2 images to Media gallery – the one that ends with 152×152.png and 144×144.png. Then select these 2 images in the Customizer’s “Site Icons” section. That is all right? So no need to fill in the path ending with .ico, right? (“Favicon – set path to image below”) I was confused by the picture enclosed by Rue Nel:
http://prntscr.com/a7ldsqThat picture asked us to copy the url of the image. If we do, which image, and where do we put this url?
May 16, 2016 at 12:53 pm #994064Hi there,
You need to add the code to Customize > Site Icons > Favicon field to get the favicon working. Ideal size should be 32*32px
The other 2 files are for (iOS and android) and windows phone site icons.
Thanks
May 17, 2016 at 11:34 am #995757Don’t understand, Mr Rahul.
If you see the picture enclosed by Rue Nel, the url there (for me) is something like
http://……/apple-touch-icon-152×152.png.But the instruction in your Customizer says:
“When setting the path to your favicon, make sure you are using the “.ico” format”So do we ignore that instruction and just copy & insert my url ending with .png?
Are you saying that I should transfer into my Media gallery a favicon that has a file name ending with 32×32.png, then copy that url into the Favicon field?
How do I test to see that I am doing the Favicon procedure correctly?
May 17, 2016 at 11:53 am #995788Hey there,
Sorry if it was not clear enough. Please follow this guide in order to setup your favicon : https://community.theme.co/forums/topic/setting-favicon/#post-387608
Thanks
May 17, 2016 at 12:46 pm #995895I read that guide, which says:
“Thanks for writing in! For Site Icons here’s what you need:
16×16 ICO – Favicon (Note: Please make sure you use .ico format)
You can create a 64×64 image and then use an online ico generator to make your favicon.ico file. You can then set the direct link to that .ico file to the customizer.
Appearance > Customize > Site Icons > Favicon (Set Path to Image Below)
152×152 PNG – Touch Icon
144×144 PNG – Tile IconFor these, you just need a regular .png file and upload to the save locatio above.
Hope this helps – thanks!”
But how to set “… the direct link to that .ico file to the customizer.”??? Why is this different from what Rue Nel showed in her picture attachment? http://prntscr.com/a7ldsq
Really puzzled. I’m a beginner. Can kindly explain how to link onto the .ico file? Or how put that into the Favicon field in Customiser?
May 17, 2016 at 1:16 pm #995934Hey there,
You will have to upload a .ico file and not .png and then copy the file url and paste it into customizer.
I hope this will clear the doubts. You can ignore the .png file posted by Rue Nel.
Thanks
May 17, 2016 at 1:24 pm #995946Hmm, how to upload a .ico file?
Is it the same way as you upload an image? Upload to Media gallery?
May 17, 2016 at 1:39 pm #995972Also, how do I test to see that I am doing the Favicon procedure correctly?
May 17, 2016 at 2:02 pm #996000Hi There,
Yes you can upload the file via your Media Library just as you were uploading a picture.
Once you have uploaded the file, you can click on it and copy the URL (Please see img attached) and make sure you copy the whole URL.
Than you just go to your Customizer
Appearance > Customize > Site Icons > Favicon and paste the URL there.
Save it.
Clean your broswer cache and reload the page.
Hope that helps,
Joao
May 18, 2016 at 2:36 pm #997986Hi patient Joao,
As suggested by you, I’ve uploaded the .ico file into Media Library. Then copy that URL and insert into the Favicon field in Customiser. How do I then see the result of what I did and see the Favicon? In other words, how do I know if I’ve done it correctly?
May 18, 2016 at 5:16 pm #998226This reply has been marked as private.May 19, 2016 at 12:08 am #998815No Darshana, that’s not by site.
i’ve no problem with the 2 fields for:
152×152 PNG – Touch Icon
144×144 PNG – Tile IconBut I think I’m not getting the Favicon field right – I don’t see the icon in my Safari on my desktop. I’ve generated the .ico file and uploaded into the Media Library, copied the URL, pasted it into the Favicon field in Customiser.
How do I see the result? Where should I go to see the Favicon as other users will see it? How do I know if the Favicon is successfully uploaded?
May 19, 2016 at 12:09 am #998816I mean that’s not “my” site.
May 19, 2016 at 2:40 am #998955Hello There,
Please share your site URL so we can check or you may use this link for checking:http://seositecheckup.com/seo-audit/favicon-test
Hope this helps.
May 19, 2016 at 10:43 am #999623Hello Lely,
Fantastic, thanks for introducing the SEO Site Checkup. The audit says:
“…you must include a meta-description tag in your page header (<head> section):
<head>
<meta name=”description” content=”type_your_description_here”>
</head>”1st Question: Can you be so kind to tell me where I should put the above tag?
As for my Favicon problem, I think it lies in not removing the old Favicon. I have tried searching for the old Favicon in my WordPress File Manager but to no avail. I tried looking in all the themes, & also used “Favicon.ico” as a keyword search. But still could not find it. So the old favicon still appears in the browser box (the http address field).
Could the old image have been inserted as a code that has something to do with my logo? When I searched for the old image in WordPress File Manager, it shows up as a “logo.png” file. It appears that this logo image is blocking my new Favicon from showing up.
2nd Question: Can you point me in the direction where the old Favicon may be lurking?
