    Hi,

I’m struggling to set up Essential Grid with a mix of images and Youtube videos.
    See here: http://www.fredriklyhagen.com/dailybuttkick/

This is set with Source Order: Featured Image, YouTube video.

I want the Youtube post to have like the image post, i.e. option to open in full post to view.
With this setting I can only play in this Essential Grid view and and can’t go full screen.

If I change Source Order to Featured Image, First Youtube content.
Then it behaves like I want but I don’t get a Youtube thumbnail in Essential Grid.

If I make a Featured Image of the Youtube video (rather avoid this step) I get the right look in Essential Grid mode but in the post I get both Featured image AND a preview of the Youtube video.

    Please advise how to solve.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for writing in.

Youtube is within youtube embed, and its thumbnail is available within it. Hence, you can’t have the youtube thumbnail as your grid item’s thumbnail.

What you could do is do the screen shot of the video as use it as featured image/thumbnail.

Pulling youtube thumbnail is possible with some workaround, but essential grid don’t do that.

    Thanks!

Thanks Rad. That’s my 3rd option in my original post so how do I then not display the Featured Image in the actual post so it’s not a double up?

    Hi there,

You mean the single post? Instead of using featured image, how about using an alternate image for your video too?

I went ahead and toggled on Alternate image on your grid source, then drag it up above featured image. Then I edit your post setting and under Alternate Source, I set the alternate image.

    Please check, hope this helps.

Cheers, It works exactly like a I want now so thank you for that and I see how you did the YouTube ID in Alternate Source.

I don’t know how you do the Alternate Image.
Do I need to manually create the Alternate Image using a screen shot from Youtube?

“I went ahead and toggled on Alternate image on your grid source, then drag it up above featured image. ”

    What does this mean?
I don’t see any Alternate Image above Featured Image…

Sorry but you need to dumb it down for me.

    Hi there,

Thanks for writing back. Not sure where you exactly facing trouble as it’s pretty straightforward. You need to set the featured image same as the video cover – http://prntscr.com/aqryir

To avail the featured image, you need to toggle the “Featured Content” to Thumbnailhttp://prntscr.com/aqrysm

    Hope this makes sense.

    Cheers!

    It’s almost working now.

Rad and Rupok, seems you’re mixing up approaches here.

Based on Rad’s reply it worked, I just wasn’t clear on how to replicate it for new posts.

I now use Portfolio with Embedded Video Code, Featured image for Essential Grid and Featured Content set to Media.

    One more question:
How can I set the preview on Essential Grid (here: http://www.fredriklyhagen.com/dailybuttkick/) to play the video instead of showing Featured Image?

    Cheers!

    Hi there!

You can’t have the video play in the grid and link through to the post while having a image, the grid will always use the image and link rather than let the video play.

If I make a Featured Image of the Youtube video (rather avoid this step) I get the right look in Essential Grid mode but in the post I get both Featured image AND a preview of the Youtube video.

If you went with this method which may work for you, then we could hide the featured image if you added all the essential grid based posts to a specific category and then use the category class and the entry-featured class with a display: none; custom css.

    Thanks!

Solved it, the issue was the order in the ajax setting of the grid.
