I’ve searched for this information already without success. Could someone please detail the key differences between the different stacks, explaining the unique features of each and what scenarios each is better suited for than the others? This information is not immediately apparent from looking at the samples as these give the impression that one could just as easily accomplish the same thing with any of the stacks, but I know that there are differences, such as the post carousel which is only available in the ethos stack… and please explain why features like that are only available with one stack. It seems like a feature that one ought to be able to insert anywhere in any stack.
March 9, 2016 at 5:21 pm #831118Hi there,
Thanks for writing in! There is information in the knowledge base regarding the stacks under the customizer section.
https://community.theme.co/kb/
The difference between stacks are what they were built for. For example ethos has the post slider and post carousel which is only available for that stack. It was meant for news/magazine type sites.
The reason why stack specific features are not available in all stacks is that certain aspects of the stack needed to be change to make the feature possible. It wouldn’t work with the other stacks without first doing the same structural and styling changes.
I know it seems like it should be something that is possible like a if it were a third party plugin we could use between different themes. The reality is even with plugins and different themes there comes a point where if you wanted to place the plugin in a certain area of your site it may require actual coding instead of just placing a shortcode within the page somewhere.
Stacks function similarly. Yes, X is just one big theme, but think of stacks as different themes. It’s not that easy to port certain features between different themes. It’s the same. The only difference is that X is a very dynamic theme and integrates most common features between stacks so it is easy for users to switch between them retaining all of their content. There are just a number of features that can’t be ported between stacks as their structure is different. i.e. You can’t bring over the carousel to a stack that has no slot for it, without first custom developing a slot…
Hope this helps clarify – thanks!
March 11, 2016 at 1:45 pm #833945To be honest, not really. I already understood that they are structured differently and thus possibilities are opened with one that wouldn’t be available in another, but that’s a very broad principle which does not illuminate any specifics. What I am looking for is something like a side-by-side feature comparison chart which says “this one can do this, but that one can’t” along with a broader description of the intended uses of each and why one is better for those uses than another. I have looked at the stack “descriptions” listed under the customizer section, but all those pages do is rifle through a few settings without pointing out how said stack is different than the rest. You’re left to just hopefully notice the differences yourself, and those pages don’t even come close to covering them all.
On a separate note: I subscribed to this thread expecting that I’d receive an email notice when there was a reply. I didn’t. Is there a way to set that up?
March 11, 2016 at 1:56 pm #833957A side-by-side comparison would be really helpful. For example, I went with another stack without knowing Ethos had the carousel, but might have gone with Ethos had I known.
March 11, 2016 at 6:29 pm #834244Hi there,
The noticeable difference is within the customizer, https://community.theme.co/kb/ (Customizer). And most the settings specific to a stack is under Appearance > Customizer > {NAME OF STACK} settings. The rest are just the same.
To be more specific, I’ll provide the links listed from here https://community.theme.co/kb/ (Customizer)
https://community.theme.co/kb/customizer-ethos/
https://community.theme.co/kb/customizer-integrity/
https://community.theme.co/kb/customizer-renew/
https://community.theme.co/kb/customizer-icon/It’s worth reading it 🙂
The other differences are layout and design. Which should be viewable through our demo pages. For example, difference between integrity’s portfolio and renew’s portfolio.
http://theme.co/x/demo/integrity/1/portfolio/
http://theme.co/x/demo/renew/1/portfolio/One of the purposes of our demo is for the user to differentiate stacks visually. It’s easier to convey messages through visual than textual if we’re presenting a design. And it’s the main purpose of stacks, to make them look different from each other.
Though, I understand your point. I’ll note that.
Thanks!
March 12, 2016 at 7:09 pm #835355Thanks for all that, but yeah – those are the pages I looked at earlier.
I think the reason the demos don’t make the differences between each stack clear is that there is a great deal of variety between demos of the same stack. The demos do a great job of highlighting the variety of looks that can be achieved by each individual stack, but in so doing obscure the differences between the stacks.
