I think it’s no secret that custom 404 pages can make a positive impact on users if done right. A good example of this comes from Reddit. They allow their users to create images for the 404 page. I have searched this forum and I see that I need to go into the code to do this. What I want to know is how hard is it to just have a drop down in the customizer or something to select which WP page I want to use as the 404?
I want to use images on my 404 page and have some fun with it so I can make a frustrated search a bit more easier on the eyes rather than a plain 404 page. So I would like to go to Pages>Add New>Make a 404 page, then go to settings or Customizer and select that page to display on a 404.
Is this possible? I think this would be a pretty enticing feature for serious website creators.

May 11, 2014 at 9:06 pm #43338Hi Guys,
This is a really nice feature and noted! But there are still many points to consider. This is nice with visual composer, though it can’t be integrated for custom editor.
Maybe we could implement it, but just using normal editor. Let’s see! 🙂
Thank you for this suggestion!
May 16, 2014 at 10:21 pm #45313Normal editor would be just fine. 404’s should be simple anyways.

September 14, 2014 at 6:41 pm #104700Any chance this will be done soon. It’ll make a big difference – so can you give us a clue if/when we’ll be able to customise our own 404 pages.
THanks

We’re sorry but we currently have no ETA. Please stay tuned for future updates and our changelog.
Thank you for understanding.
September 14, 2014 at 11:35 pm #104810I think it would be a great idea. Can’t wait to see it in action.
September 14, 2014 at 11:50 pm #104822Stay tuned for updates George. 🙂
September 30, 2014 at 2:54 pm #115877Desperate for this also. I noticed that there are plugins on WordPress.org for the Genesis theme, which allow pointing 404 at any internal page.
I also tried a plugin called “Custom 404 Error Page” which doesn’t work. It doesn’t follow any of the page settings, i.e. the checkbox for “Don’t display page title”, etc. The body text displays only the first few lines, which are then truncated with an ellipsis. No link to see the rest. Handy.
This just seems like a dumb problem for any theme to have. There should ALWAYS be an option to redirect any 404s to a normal, fully functional and actual site page without all the clowning about. Hard-coding “Oops!” deep into the theme is really bad. Particularly when my client thinks I wrote it!
