nickgardner92ParticipantHello world. WordPress and theme X newb here.
I am wanting to create a lot of specific changes to the header and topbar.
The more I am reading about customizing these the more I hear about changing to a child theme in order to customize past the themes boundaries. I am all game for it, but I’m afraid I might screw everything all of my progress if I go change this…as I have done that before already…which sucked big time. Would you be willing to take a look at my stuff to see if its a good idea to make the switch?February 25, 2017 at 1:23 pm #1385559

ChristopherModeratorThanks for writing in! Regretfully, at this time I am not entirely certain what it is you would like to accomplish based on the information given in your post. If you wouldn’t mind providing us with a little more clarification on what it is you’re wanting to do (a link to a similar example site would be very helpful, or perhaps some screenshots), we’ll be happy to provide you with a response once we have a better understanding of the situation.

nickgardner92ParticipantHey Christopher! Sorry for the confusion man. So a big goal of my wife’s blog is having a lead magnet in the header. Ive seen this done in someone’s blog before…come to find it was all custom work to get the picture and button in the header..See first file attached. The more I read, the more I found that if you want to do custom coding to build something outside of the theme chosen you have to have a child theme active. This is where I was stuck…I don’t even know if I am running child theme…if I should be to get what we want..and the risk of activating a child theme. The last thing I want to do is mess up all of our progress and lose everything. Thats issue #1.
The second thing we were trying to do is to create two menus (see second attached file).
This also set me back to the child theme question…because it seems like it all has to be custom built. Hope that cleared things up. Cant thank you enough for the help.February 26, 2017 at 10:13 pm #1386790

LelyModeratorHello There,
First, it is always recommended to backup your site.
We can see if child theme is active on Appearance > Themes. If child theme is not active, please check this guide:https://community.theme.co/kb/how-to-setup-child-themes/. Yes, child theme is best for customization so that it will not be overwritten on theme updates.
Regarding the menu, why do you need two menus, and on which page you want the other menu?

nickgardner92ParticipantHey Lely, yep my site is backed up. And it doesnt look like the child theme is active.
We wanted a topbar menu to have “About”, “Home” “Courses”, Etc…and another menu below a large picture to have blog specific topics…ex: “teaching” “Wellness” “Devos”.
Make sense?

JoaoModeratorHi There,
You do not need a child theme for what you are looking to achieve.
On Appereance Customizer Header, turn on topbar, and add to top bar content:
HOURS | DIRECTIONS | CONTACTAdjust the name and the urls according to your needs, you also can add more links.
Hope it helps
Joao
