I am sorry but I just don’t get it. I must be missing something huge. I cannot finish my site until I get this figured out, and I desperately need to get my X Theme responsive site active.
I have seen the video Portfolios many many times. However, to my knowledge, no where do I see an overview explanation of how typical post categories, portfolio pages, portfolio item pages, and portfolio categories all fit together. And other items that may be involved. Maybe I (we) should know this but I do not. The video discusses how to make multiple selections within a dropdown box but how is the whole thing organized.
I simply want to create custom portfolios based on post categories, so I can create navigation to specific topics and items. I guess the question comes down to – how do post categories carry into Portfolio Pages or Portfolio Item Pages? Is that even close?
Thanks, Rex
November 4, 2014 at 12:05 pm #138440I am so sorry but I am having trouble understanding with what you want to accomplish. Maybe we can start by having you provide us with your URL. Then it sounds like maybe you want different portfolio categories which is possible by setting them up by going to the categories page under portfolios or this page [yoursite]/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=portfolio-category&post_type=x-portfolio
Each of these pages will create a category page that you can link to. For example if california is a category the page will be [yoursite]/?portfolio-category=california and that will show all the portfolio items with the california category.
Send us your URL and I think we can move forward more specifically.
November 5, 2014 at 11:58 pm #139398My X-theme temp site is – http://hopefaithprayer.org/ On the main menu there is a selection for Authors. I want that to go to a portfolio page similar to your demo – http://theme.co/x/demo/integrity/1/portfolio/ that would have all my author category items.
It appears like this page would be a portfolio page and the selections within it, I believe, are portfolio-item pages. I don’t know how to get the ‘standard’ categories listed on any of my posts to be included. Your video shows the making of a portfolio page by choosing the page template – Layout Portfolio. The meta box that then comes up only gives a selection for portfolio categories. Where do the ‘standard’ post categories fit in? I don’t see them showing up anywhere.
I would assume that a portfolio page would include posts that have been included because of the selection of specific categories that are connected to those posts. That is, you have a portfolio page that would include all the posts with a selected category and/or its children. In your above example, one of the link selections is – http://theme.co/x/demo/integrity/1/portfolio-item/roman-forum/ Is this a portfolio page with a category listing of ‘roman-forum’?
My active site is http://hopefaithprayer.com/ It has over 500 posts and pages, and many categories. I need to organize my navigation with these smart custom portfolio category pages. I am also loosing readers because of being non-responsive. Thanks, Rex

You can try creating multiple portfolios.

November 9, 2014 at 12:41 am #141082Thank you but I have read this multiple times. This is a non-answer. It does not respond to any of the items in my first question. Please at least answer the following questions:
1. What is the difference between the portfolio item page created by selecting from the Portfolio Dashboard menu and the portfolio page created from the page menu using the Layout-Portfolio template?
2. When I create a portfolio page using method in the instructions linked above under Category Select I am only able to choose portfolio categories from the meta box. Nowhere do I see an input option for post categories.
3. If portfolio categories are used to navigate custom portfolios, how do you connect them to specific posts?Thank you.

Thanks for the information.
1. Portfolio page ( Layout – Portfolio ) is portfolio item’s home/index page. You can have multiple portfolio index page with different category filters. Portfolio item is of course is the post you will be seeing on portfolio home page.
2. Portfolio categories are for portfolio, you can’t assign a non-portfolio categories inside portfolio page. Posts are for blog, and they have their own categories.
3. You can’t assign portfolio categories to a post. When you assign a portfolio category to portfolio item it will appear on portfolio page where your category filter is assigned.
Hope this helps.
November 9, 2014 at 8:02 pm #141366Thanks, I get it. I am disappointed but now I know why I have not been able to combine blog posts (and blog post categories) with your new portfolio features.
Is there a way of taking my existing 500+ blog posts, and using their post categories, to create portfolio pages similar to the your new portfolio pages? I know I can always make custom menus with a custom archive address like http://hopefaithprayer.com/category/faith-thoughts/ but is there a more elegant way? Especially, one with filtering?
Basically, a portfolio index page would then hold and filter blog posts based on post categories. It would totally re-imagine blog post navigation and organization. If that worked, I could take over the world!
November 10, 2014 at 3:15 am #141509Hey Rex,
That would be possible by drastically modifying the post index template. However, that falls outside the scope of our support since that would require custom development. But we’ll take note of this as feature request and might implement that option for blog posts.
Thanks.
November 10, 2014 at 6:47 pm #142127What page (or post) layout or shortcode would work best for emulating a portfolio index page where I could add custom category link addresses like http://hopefaithprayer.com/category/faith-thoughts/ ?
Instead of the filtering, I would insert a graphic, textbox, or menu item for each link. Any quick ideas?
Thanks much. Rex
