The cover photo is never used on X theme and it’s not part of the templates. The suggested workaround is to remove it since it’s not useful and fixing it has no benefit since it’s not used. As of now, there is no news about it, but would you like to share some details where you wish to display the cover photos? I can forward it as feature request 🙂
X theme’s integration with BuddyPress is just through templates, as a skin. It has no relation to core functionality such as sending invitations, but would you mind providing a video recording of the issue you’re getting? I can’t reproduce this issue on my end. I can’t promise a solution, but I’ll try to get information as much as I can, maybe we can use that for future improvement.
Thanks!
August 6, 2016 at 1:55 am #1119880Same problem here. Cannot upload cover images.
That said, is there a way to tweak BuddyPress so that it doesn’t prompt for a cover image? This will cause my users endless grief and is preventing me from going live with my site.

October 8, 2016 at 5:29 am #1207856I would like to add my vote for getting this one fixed ASAP. For those of us using BuddyPress it diminishes the user’s perception of the site.
Thanks
October 8, 2016 at 2:56 pm #1208184Noted that!
January 21, 2017 at 12:50 am #1339406I need (and expected) the user to be able to upload a cover image. I think most users expect that too. When can we expect a proper fix — disabling the feature is a tragedy and poor form.
Upvote for getting that fixed.
