    Hi,

I posted a similar question last night but I’m not sure what happened to it, it doesn’t show up anywhere in my topics or in the forum so I’m giving it another go.

Im just moving over to WP from Squarespace so I am very much in the middle of a learning curve here, mostly getting use to the UX on the back end and customizer so my sites just a baby and on the temp.URL.

    Website URL: http://69.89.31.60/~weathey3

All plug ins and theme versions are up to date. Found X on 4/1 and made the switch.

    BLOG:
Im getting use to the way blogs are handled in WP but I think I have it figured out. Instead of having all my posts live on the site I’m using categories. I have a few things I need to get handled before the blog is where it needs to be.

    Im using:

    Integrity Light

    masonry

I have removed the category header and sub header

I’ve also removed some meta: posters name, comments, and category name

What I want to do know:

-add a fourth column to the masonry grid
-remove the calendar icon and \ from post date
-change post background color/body text/background text/ and add a border (I’ve tried on my own to do this using inspect element but seem to be having trouble finding the right class to do this.
-without using featured image, Id like to have my top image or video in the post show up, right now for some reason only text will show up.

    On to Portfolio

I was turned on to the functionality of the portfolio by an X team member in a past question.

On my current live Squarespace site I have four types of main feature content, each with their own feel and layout only one is live currently heres a link to the index for the ALBUMS section http://www.weatherbrand.com/albums

What you see is an index page, and each thumbnail represents a page that was added to the index and they automatically populate into a grid with a title thats great and I believe I can achieve a similar function via Portfolios correct?

They second feature you’ll notice if you click one of the articles in albums and scroll to the bottom of it is that it was called in on the index page so that when you get to the bottom the other stories are there for the reader to easily navigate through. I’d like to mimic this feature in my X site. Wether its a slider of all the portfolios of a certain category or a grid layout like what Ive shown, Id just like the user to be able to find all the articles of that category waiting for them once they make it to the bottom of the article they are on. I’d like to achieve this without having to manually add a related content slider to each individual portfolio post.

Sorry if I made that sound really confusing.

I appreciate some direction, this is what i need to achieve with X before I can really get to styling my site and adding content, and polishing it up.

I have 2 other sites Im hoping to move over to X and wordpress from Squarespace if I can get this first one how it needs to be.

    Thank you again,
    -Nathan

    Hi Nathan,

I’m sorry for the delay over the weekend. Usually we’re able to get to a question in 24 hours Monday-Friday, but over the weekend it can take a bit longer.

Making the switch to WordPress is a big jump. You definitely gain more flexibility and features, but of course there’s a bit of a learning curve to understanding how everything works.

Also, with WordPress you have total control, and are responsible for everything from beginning to end. This includes security and speed as you’ve pointed out. However, this is a problem that’s been solved in the WordPress world. Have you heard of Managed Hosting? Similar to how you don’t need to worry about hosting with Squarespace, there are hosting providers that will handle speed and security for you. Here are some of the leading managed WordPress hosts:

    https://pagely.com/
    http://wpengine.com/
    http://getflywheel.com/

Going back to the WordPress dashboard, I’d recommend that you not use the built in editor. This will result in modifying the theme files directly. So when you update the theme, they’ll be overridden. Instead, I’d recommend that you look into using child themes: http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes

I’m sorry to hear you’re switching back, but I understand. Based on your request above, these are all possible with X. You just might need a few CSS tweaks here and there, as well as making good use of the customizer. Just let us know if you want to revisit this after all, and we can take another look.
