X Theme 7.01 / Cornerstone 4.01 does not load - spinner only

After updating from X Theme 6.x to 7.01 and Cornerstone from an unknown old version to 4.0.1, Cornerstone does not load. Instead, the spinner is shown and keeps spinning.

I could not find any error messages in the Javascript console as well as in the server (PHP) logs and the WP logs.

Things we verified:

  • PHP error log shows no out of memory errors - we’ve tested with 256MB and 512MB
  • We don’t have use caching plugins
  • We’ve tried disabling “Progressive WP” plugin & remove the custom code from our X child themes functions.php

I am having the exact same issue with an installation that only has X, Cornerstone and the Under Construction plugins. No content yet.

Thank you for writing in, your issue seems to have something to do with Progressive WordPress (PWA)


Please do testing for a plugin conflict. You can do this by deactivating all third party plugins, and seeing if the problem remains. If it’s fixed, you’ll know a plugin caused the problem, and you can narrow down which one by reactivating them one at a time.

And you said above that you don’t have use caching plugins, but it seems you have an internal caching, please contact your hosting on how to clear that cache.

Hi @Bearzooka,

You seems to have a different issue, please do the plugin conflict test as well and see if that resolves the issue. If not, please create your own thread and provide us login credentials in there.

Thanks a lot for the swift reply!

You are right - our hoster did offer internal caching - we have now deactivated completely to allow for further debugging.

We have also tried disabling the “PWA” plugin. As you can verify using our credentials, it is now disabled but still Cornerstone does not work.

On a copy of our production page, we also tried disabling all plugins except for Cornerstone. Also that did not work.

Hello Stefan,

It seems that you are using WordPress 4.9.11. Would you mind updating your WordPress core to version 5.2.3. Most of the time, out dated WordPress core will create issues in your site.
