We were using a social shortcode that no longer works. Am I doing something wrong or did something break? It was being used in a footer text widget.

Set it as Secure Note

  • Link to your site
  • WordPress Admin username / password

This line <div class="x-social-global"></div> is just a container, it does not output a content.

Please have this instead.
