When I click the “customize” button on the wordpress toolbar, I get taken to the X editor despite switching to pro. My browser then slows down and/or crashes. I can use the pro editor if I go through the dashboard.

You’re viewing the correct interface when you click Customize. What do you mean by it freezes up?
The only way to get to the main options is thru X > Launch. The Customizer is a different interface and we encourage the use of the Theme Options and not the Customizer though they function the same currently.
