Pro (Child) Theme Kills Gutenberg !?

Upgraded to Wordpress 5.0.1 from 4.99 yesterday and further to 5.0.2 today. The site is on Pro 2.4.3 and Child Theme 1.0.

Immediately it was clear that the new Gutenberg editor wasn’t working. In fact trying to create or edit any posts or pages results in a completely blank screen. Nothing loads. At all. To avoid misunderstanding here’s a screenshot of what that looks like: https://www.screencast.com/t/zDRtH2G5wI
Not too exciting…

Did the usual trouble-shooting:

  • took care of the local browser;
  • disabled all plugins on the site to see if that might be the issue.

Then I changed to the twentynineteen theme just to see if X/Pro might actually be the problem.
Upon loading Gutenberg under twentynineteen everything went smoothly. Back on X Gutenberg wouldn’t load at all.

Looks to me like X kills Gutenberg. What can be done?

Hi @thusgaard,

Thanks for reaching out.

It appears to be an internal server error and could be due to memory limit. Compared to TwentyNineteen which is almost no feature than a theme, Pro theme has a lot of features that may require a greater limit. But I’m not saying it requires great resources, maybe your limit is just too low. Plus, Gutenberg works on my installation with the latest version.

Could you try increasing your memory limit to at least 256mb up to 512mb? Please check this https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/fix-wordpress-memory-exhausted-error-increase-php-memory/

It could be related to the script conflict too (updated but some files aren’t overwritten with the new one), then I recommend doing the manual installation to make sure files are well installed. Please check this https://theme.co/apex/forum/t/setup-updating-your-themes-and-plugins/62 ( Manual Updates )

Else, please provide your site’s URL, admin, and FTP login credentials in the secure note. We may need to get the exact error for further recommendation.

Thanks!

Thanks for getting back to me, Rad. For now I’ve downgraded to 4.9.9, so I can at least work on posts and pages that sit outside of Pro. My specific challenge is that apparently I can’t push content from StoryChief.io into an X themed Pro-edited post. That’s what provides the need for handling posts in Gutenberg or Classic editors.

@dschmidtks seemed to have a similar challenge, and I’m looking forward to seeing if we can find a solution.

I’ll check the potential memory issue and report back. Thanks!

Increasing memory didn’t seem to do much…

Hello @thusgaard,

Thanks for updating the thread.

Can you please share some login details in secure note for us to take a closer look?

Thanks.
