Can anyone enlighten me on how to go about adding an image to the top of my wordpress posts index page?
I tried adding an image to the Widget > Header but nothing displays.

If so, then create an Slider with just one static image using the Revolution slider extension, after you created the slider set that as the Above Masthead Feature Slider of your Blog page.
