Installed cornerstone, still getting error messages with plugins

We attempted to installed Cornerstone (required by X) automatically, but were unable to. You may need to install Cornerstone manually. Error Details.

showing at top of page, despite me installing this plugin manually and activating it

from plugins >> | cornerstone | active | none | 0.7.5 |

when trying to install any other plugin from inside X interface (slider revolution, any of them) I get error

Your WordPress file permissions do not allow plugins to be installed.

permissions for wordpress are set to include write - do I need to do anything else to get this working?
