Incorrect page title sometimes displays on X - Custom 404 page [Follow-up 2]

Hi,
We upgraded to the new version of X 6.1.6 and still have the Custom 404 problem described in our previous posts:

November 2017 https://theme.co/apex/forum/t/incorrect-page-title-sometimes-displays-on-x-custom-404-page/13596

April 2018 https://theme.co/apex/forum/t/incorrect-page-title-sometimes-displays-on-x-custom-404-page-follow-up/30140

Is there a status on fixing this?
Thanks.

Hey @NexLAN,

I could not replicate this issue in my test site anymore unlike the past issue so this must have been fixed though there is no specific bug fix posted in our changelog. Our core developer tested this also and it’s not happening on his end also.

Please ensure X and Cornerstone is up to date. Would you mind giving us WP Admin and FTP access so we could check your setup? For now, please ensure X, Cornerstone and Custom 404 extension are up to date and also Yoast and WordPress. If you have customization related to the page title, also remove it temporarily.

Thanks.

Hi,

Multiple users here are still replicating the issue on the live site. You may be testing pages from the top nav bar? The problem happens when the invalid page is farther down in the menu hierarchy than that, which is the majority of our pages.

When the Not Found page is 2-3 menu levels deep, it returns our custom Whoops! page properly, for example:
http://nexlan.com/invalid
http://nexlan.com/accountmate/invalid
http://nexlan.com/about-nexlan/invalid

When the Not Found page is 4-5 menu levels deep, it returns the most recent blog post’s page title (currently Is Your System Sick?) instead of the custom 404 page’s title, for example:
http://nexlan.com/industry-solutions/distribution/invalid
http://nexlan.com/services/emergency-support/invalid
http://nexlan.com/accountmate/vertical-solutions/accu-dart/invalid

WordPress, X and all the site’s plug-ins are up to date.

Re. Customization related to the page title, I’m not aware of any. The actual page title is what gets displayed. For example, on this page http://nexlan.com/accountmate/ the page title displays as AccountMate which is the exact page title and capitalization that’s in the page title field for that page in the WP editor.

I’ve created and tested WordPress and FTP credentials for you.

Thanks -Ann

Hi Ann,

Another support here, I also tested this on my test sites(4-5 levels deep) and could not replicate the issue as well.

Can you try activating your parent theme and see if the issue persist.
This is just for testing so we can narrow down what is causing the issue.

Thanks

Hi,

I just activated the X parent theme and the problem remained. I’ve reactivated the child theme again now.

Yesterday before posting my ticket I tried deactivating X Custom 404, and installed and activated 404page plug-in. It had the same problem. I deactivated it and reactivated X Custom 404.

Also tried temporarily assigning a different page to be the 404 page in X Custom 404 but that didn’t fix it.

Hi Ann,

Your Custom 404 extension is still out of date, you can check the latest supported versions here

You can deactivate and delete your current version (1.1.3), then navigate to X > Validation > Extensions and reinstall the Custom 404, navigate back to plugins panel and activate the Custom 404. Because all of the plugin settings are stored in the database, and because version 2.x will migrate settings from older versions, its safe to use this method of deleting the previous version. But you might still need to adjust a few options and re-save the custom 404 settings. Also, re-save your Settings > Permalinks

If you have any caching plugin/features on your site, please clear it.

Let us know how it goes,
Cheers!

Hi,

I deleted the old Custom 404 and installed 2.0.3.

I re-saved permalinks.

Our SG Optimizer plug-in from SiteGround hosting is active but none of the caching features have ever been turned on. I just purged its cache anyways. Confirmed that individual pages aren’t cached. Deactivated the plugin. Cleared browser cache.

The problem is still there.

Something I just noticed - When I go to an invalid page, the browser tab in Chrome displays our favicon followed by "Whoops! | NexLAN ". Whoops! is the correct custom 404 page title - and it appears correctly in the browser tab regardless of whether the 404 page content is displaying the correct or incorrect page title.

Hey Ann,

I have not replicated this in my online test site but I just created a new local test site (clean install and no third party plugins) and this time, I’ve replicated the issue. It’s weird. I’ll post this in our issue tracker.

For now, regretfully, you will need to use a page template that will not display the title like Blank Container | Header Footer

You’re patience regarding this issue would be very much appreciated.

Hi Christian,

Thanks, I appreciate you logging this in your issue tracker. I agree this is a weird issue.
At what point will we hear a status update or when should I inquire again?

I ask because in my original ticket, the conversation ended last November with @mldarshana saying, “I have submitted this to our issue tracker.” And then nothing happened. In my second ticket in April, @RueNel said, “Our developers is currently working on this and an update release is underway. Please watch out for it.” And then the new release didn’t include a fix.

Thanks,
-Ann

Hi Ann,

Sorry for waiting, yes I saw the report by Darshana on our issue tracker (Github), then it was merged with other seemingly related issues. This issue, in particular, has not been resolved yet.

Regretfully, we can’t provide an ETA when will be this resolve. You can check the changelog when an update it releases if a bugfix on this particular issue is included.

For now please follow Christian’s advise to use a page template that does not display a title. Any of the Blank Container or Blank - No Container

Thank you for understanding,
