How to move staging files to live

Hi guys, I need some advice on the best practice when using Pro with a staging environment. This is my setup …

I have a live site running Woocommerce and using an inferior theme. I have created a duplicate (all files and database tables) in a staging environment in to which I will install the Pro theme. I’d like to use the staging environment to restyle my website using the Pro theme. However, customers will still continue to make transaction on the live site.

This is where I need your advice. How would I go about moving my new Pro styled pages from staging on to live without loosing Woocommerce data and new customer registrations.

Thanks

Stewart

Hello Stewart,

Thanks for asking.

You can take a look at our migration guide to securely move data from staging to live server:

If you prefer more of a guided video tutorial, then please take a look at following YouTube search result:

Thanks.

Hi Prasant and thanks for coming back to me. I’ve read the instructions and if I have understood it correctly, then the entire staging site (including database) will be moved to live? The issue is that while I am building the Pro pages in staging, we will have customers making purchases on live. If I move the staging DB to live I will loose all of these transactions. Hence, I will need to migrate just the theme and Pro pages. Is this possible? If not, then it will make our move to Pro almost impossible.

Best wishes

Stewart

Hello @stewartrandall,

Thanks for updating the thread.

In that case, you do have the option to move the only the theme files and pages. Please do following:

  1. Theme files: Login to FTP using softwares like Filezilla and under /wp-content/themes/ directory, copy Pro Theme folder (and child theme if any) and upload to live website under same directory. You can take a look at following docs to get started with Filezilla. https://www.tipsandtricks-hq.com/how-to-use-filezilla-with-wordpress-8956
  2. Page: You can save and export the pages as a template and then import again on the live website. To help you I have recoded a sample video screencast. Please take a look. https://cloudup.com/cb2Kmxv4jg7

Thanks.

That’s great. Thanks

You are most welcome.
