How to edit a X theme website without publishing

hello,
I am taking over a website for a client and am going to be using X Theme. Because their website has a lot of traffic, I can’t afford to have the website down for any amount of time or post a website that is only 10% complete. I was wondering if there is was a way that I could work on creating their new website using X theme while keeping their current website (currently running some trash generic wordpress theme) active, and then when I am all finished, publish it and take over their previous theme.

Hi Morgan,

Since the site you need to edit is using other theme at the moment, it might break when you install X theme. The best way to go forward is to create a development/staging site.
