How do you add a custom font

I downloaded a custom font that I would like to use in the x theme. I’ve looked at the forums for how to upload the font to the theme, but I can’t find out how this is done. I am fine with adding the custom CSS to use the font once it’s uploaded, but I need to know how to upload and install it into x theme. Can someone please help?
