Excluding certain categories from main blog sidebar

What I would like to do is exclude 3 categories of blog posts from the main blog index sidebar. When I tried the code I see here https://theme.co/apex/forum/t/excluding-category-from-blog/6242 offered on the forum I am left with blank spaces where the excluded posts would have been and the category names still show in the “Categories” widget in the blog sidebar. Any help would be appreciated.

Excluding specific categories from Sidebar will require some custom development work which falls outside the scope of support we can offer. Having said that I can share resources that you can take a look to get started.
