Essential Grid flickr stream videos don't play

I’m using Essential Grid to display a flickr feed stream and upon opening the video via my site, it has no option to play the video, it just opens as an image. The video plays just fine via the Flickr website. See private note.

Hello @threeoten,

Thanks for writing in!

Did you select video to display in your grid instead of the image? Please provide us access to your site so that we can check your settings. Please create a secure note with the following info:
– Link to your site
– WordPress Admin username / password

To know how to create a secure note, please check this out: https://theme.co/apex/forum/t/how-to-get-support/288

Regards.

I don’t see where to select video instead of image. See secure note.

Hey @threeoten,

Thank you for providing the credentials. I checked and apparently it looks like Essential Grid only provides option to show imagery from Flickr accounts. You can use an alternate stream option to do that e.g YouTube, Vimeo or even self hosted videos. To learn more about video streaming in Essential Grid please follow:

Hope this helps!

Bummer. I’ve tried an instagram stream but it seems there is a bug (according to other forum posts) that doesn’t allow the account to connect. I also tried Facebook and did all this complicated setup in facebook for developers, but ended up with the same problem with the account not connecting. I want to do a mix of photo and video which vimeo/youtube don’t do.

Hi @threeoten,

Yes, and it seems that bug is recurring issues even on older versions. Perhaps permission issue or their standard has changed that usually happen over and over. Unfortunately, it’s only limited to the features provided by the 3rd party plugin. But we’ll keep an eye on those possible issues.

Thanks!

Ok, I’ve given up on Essential Grid…

Now trying The Grid. I have told the plugin to display 24 items in the grid but it never displays anymore than 12. Also, the icon on item hover is suddenly all the way to the right side and I have no idea why.

Hi @threeoten,

There is a notice in the Grid plugin that says:

Instagram have changed its API the 4th April 2018. For now, the official API does not support anymore Media endpoints (to get media from users).
Due to these new restrictions, it’s, currently, not possible to retrieved more than 9/12 posts from an user. The way to fetch these posts from Instagram is not offical and may not work at any time.
Thank you for your understanding.

So it looks like It’s not possible to load more then 12 posts due to Instagram API changes, please see https://codecanyon.net/item/the-grid-responsive-wordpress-grid-plugin/13306812/comments?page=61&filter=all#comment_19246419

Hope this helps!

That’s a bummer that the two grid options that Themeco offers have some pretty major limitations…

I want to display images and videos on my site from a social media stream for ease of updating content. What do you suggest I use to accomplish this?

Thanks

Hi @threeoten,

That limitation is imposed by the social providers for their API. And it’s something can be controlled by any theme or plugins.

And even if you found another plugin or alternative, it would be still the same since the limitations are on the social provider side. I think they are now limiting it to encourage more engagement within their social sites rather than from other sites where their videos or images are embedded.

Your only choice is use it with limitations or contact some developers that are familiar with social related developments. But again, it may result in the same limit due to API, perhaps you could hire a developer that could create a scraper, something that fetches pieces of information from the sites bypassing the API. But that would make your site banned by those social media providers.

Thanks!

That’s not actually true though. I’m finding several other plugins out there that allow more than 12 items to load. https://smashballoon.com/instagram-feed/demo/
https://feedthemsocial.com/instagram-feed-demo/
https://elfsight.com/instagram-feed-instashow/wordpress/#demo

Considering The Grid & Essential Grid social media streams not even able to connect (also Facebook connect link on The Grid doesn’t even work), some not able to load more than 12, and not able to play videos… it feels more like Themco has partnered with plugins that appear to offer something but can’t actually deliver.

So does Pro offer any sort of viable way to connect to a social stream and display both videos and photos?

Hi @threeoten,

But that limits came from them. Please check this as well https://stackoverflow.com/questions/12311037/displaying-more-than-20-photos-in-instagram-api. Perhaps, 20 is common and to make it safer, it’s toned down to 12.

And it maybe depends on the occurrence or interval of the requests. What Instagram avoiding is traffic, hence, it could be lower. And so other plugins made it fewer to prevent penalties like denied permission. I saw stream issues as well that returns 400 error code over the existing Instagram feed that previously working but stopped.

But if you think that plugin (in your provided links) could provide those items as displayed on their demo then yes, you could use their plugin as well. You can check this https://smashballoon.com/instagram-feed/support/faq/ as well for issues and they’ve got same problems as on Essential Grids and The Grids. It’s the plugin from your provided URLs.

I also checked and it’s a bit old from the demo and cached which may explain why it still works, OR perhaps their app as a plugin has upper-hand when it comes to permission. Permission is in between your site and Instagram server, not with theme or plugin since it’s your site that you should allow accessing Instagram resources through their developer account. Some plugins also stored them on the cache (within the site) so it might be displaying a stored copy.

And right a few days ago, they changed it again https://www.instagram.com/developer/. So expect more upcoming changes to those plugins again.

Since they are 3rd party plugins then I can’t provide any information on their part. All I provided are based on my observation, available information from API developers, and testing. I can’t recommend any plugins, but I was just giving a warning that it may happen to other plugins as well.

And only our developers are able to contact the plugin authors for integrations for our theme, or if there are any issues. But you may need to buy their license if you wish to contact them directly.

Thanks!
