When trying to upload an image, I get an error message. “An error occurred in the upload. Please try again later.” Then immediately after, I get booted out of WP and have to log back in.

You need to check few things first. Make sure that you’re using the latest version of WordPress on your site. You can check the latest version from here (https://wordpress.org/download/) and update if necessary (https://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress).
Then make sure that you’re using the latest version of X theme and Cornerstone plugin as well. You can check the latest version numbers from here (https://theme.co/changelog/) and update your X theme and plugins accordingly (https://theme.co/apex/forum/t/setup-updating-your-themes-and-plugins/62).
Then check the PHP version running on your server and make sure that you’re using PHP v5.6.x or later to avoid any incompatibility issues. WordPress recommendations can be seen here (https://wordpress.org/about/requirements/).
Then make sure that you have set the correct file permissions by following this guide (https://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_Permissions).
If you’re still having issues, I would suggest you to contact your hosting provider to resolve the issue.
