I was making changes directly to X theme, I now know I should’ve been using a child theme. I’m going to download a child theme today but what should I do about the changes I already made?

Do you mean you edited the actual theme files? Or did you make the changes in the Wordpress admin? If you did not edit the theme files then it should be fine if you install the child theme and update the parent theme. But, if you have edited the php files of the parent theme, then you should copy those changes to the child theme so that you won’t lose them after updating the theme.
