Creating custom category pages and the future of "the blog"

The blog and categories has been widely discussed so looking to see if there is a good solution BUT mainly would like to know if waiting for the future changes to the blog will solve my issues.

We are able to design a page for the main blog roll and then assign it as “The Blog” in the wordpress settings.

There is no way to do this for categories and so we have to use the wordpress/xtheme default category pages.

Is it possible to make a custom page and have it replace the default wordpress category page (besides using a redirect)?
www,abc,com/category/my-custom-page

If not will this be possible in the future update to the blog that has been talked about?

Hello @clefler,

Thanks for writing in! While we cannot talk specifics on updates to blog features moving forward as there is no firm timeline on this as of now, you certainly have options at your disposal with the third party Extensions included with X. You could take a plugin such as “The Grid” or “Essential Grid” and setup multiple grids to pull through posts of certain categories on pages of your liking and link to those if needed.

As for making a custom page and having it replace the default WordPress category page, to do this you would need to look into using a child theme and overwriting the appropriate views to do so. We have an in-depth article on this in our Knowledge Base:

With that, you could overwrite the category templates and have it output whatever you want on those pages as needed. Hopefully this all helps to point you in the right direction. Cheers!
