Changing the layout of the default Blog/Home Page ++

Hello!

I just started a new blog using Pro (my first time). I was with X for some time, but haven’t used it in a while.

After a lot of searching, am I correct in discovering that I can’t change the default Blog (home) page unless I use child themes? I see I can change “The Blog” and I can change “Welcome to …” but I can’t control the layout other than full width. I can kinda accept this, but I want more. Am I missing something?

Also, this is what I want to accomplish for the Blog…

Travel (main menu)

  • Itinerary Page (drop down)
    ---- Post A
  • Resources Page (drop down)
    ---- Post B

So, if I want to make Post A show up on BOTH the Itinerary page and the Travel Page, I place Post A under the Itinerary Category and make the Travel Category the parent of the Itinerary Category?

That’s why I want to create a blog page for both the travel and Itinerary pages. I think I recall there’s a Blog shortcode available. If so, would I create a page and insert the shortcode then? This would solve the 2nd paragraph.

Or, is there another way to do this?

TIA

Hey Marshall,

Thanks for writing in. As of this time, regretfully, you can’t change the default Blog (home) page without overriding PHP templates responsible for displaying the blog using a child theme. If you’re a web developer, here’s our guide to modify our themes: https://theme.co/apex/forum/t/customizations-best-practices/205

If you’re not a developer, the current option is to use one of the bundled grid plugins as they have more blog display options and you can add grids in pages. Please see the items below:

In the future, it will be possible to create your own blog layout using the Layout Builder that is currently under development. You can read more about it in our latest status report: https://theme.co/apex/forum/t/status-report-may-1-2019/57564

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the quick response.

So, is there a shortcode for blog content? I found this Category Archive [details=Summary]
http://theretiredpostie.com/category/retirement/
[/details] on one of my pages and I’m not sure how it got there. I might be able to make this work with the Archive, in a roundabout way (until the new update), if I can insert the shortcode into a page.

Thanks.

Hello Marshall,

The only shortcode we have is the recent posts element which is also available when you create the page in Cornerstone. You can use this element to display post items of the same category. Please check out the demo here:

And yes, by default, WordPress provides a separate archive for each category. You will have:

Hope this helps.
