Very beginner wordpress user, but I am trying to figure out how to place my Blog in a static home page so I can add content in between the navbar and the blog itself using either the Renew or Ethos Theme.

Hi Ryan,
You can not have that feature. You either can have the blog listing as the homepage or the static homepage. One other solution is possible but it will not show quite like the blog listing.
You can use the Cornerstone to add the content to the static homepage and then use the Classic Recent Posts element to add the blog listing. You will have some options there to determine how many blog items to show. You can read about the options below:
