404 on Media Category/Tags and Menu Links and Pages DISAPPEAR

WordPress v4.9.8
Theme.co Pro v2.3.8
The Grid v2.6.70

Hello Support,

I’m getting 404 Server Response on my media categories and Tags.
These Tags & Categories will not load (showing the 404 page) but appear to be fine as they exist, they’re published, and they’re NOT redirected.

  • I isolated the problem to the plugin The Grid, as when I deactivate the plugin the media Categories and Tags Menu Links and Pages DISAPPEAR, getting a page “Invalid taxonomy.”.

  • I discovered this on the Staging and I confirmed by retesting on the Live-Page.

  • I don’t remember if I used The Grid to introduce these categories and tags, I think I did it the regular way.

  • Why are these Media Tags & Categories dependable of The Grid plugins?

After further testing, NOW the Media Tags & Categories pages are loading without showing the 404, I have only done two things that could’ve help fix this:

A- Increase the Max. Post Size from 128M to 256M.
B- I Clear Cache on the Global Settings of The Grid.

Hello Gonzalo,

Thanks for asking.

I tried to see if problem can be replicated on my local setup with media category and The Gird plugin but it’s working fine. So, please try out following solutions and let us know how it goes:

  1. Please make sure you are using at least PHP version 7.0 on the server. Here’s server requirement guide that you can take a look. https://wordpress.org/about/requirements/
  2. Try increasing memory limit to 512mb. https://theme.co/apex/forum/t/troubleshooting-increasing-php-memory-limit/16935

In case problem is still there, kindly get back to us with the result of the steps above and URL/User/Pass of your WordPress dashboard using the Secure Note functionality of the post to follow up the case.

Thank you.

Hello @VGonzaloMartinez,

Thanks for sharing the details.

I checked the website and when I checked the category pages the URL structure was a bit odd. So I reset the permalinks structure and it worked for a moment but upon reloading the page issue I could see 404 error message. Having said that, I see blank page on the media library page and the images are not showing up.

I also see that you are hosted on Godaddy and have also activated Cloudflare. Please note that Godaddy has built in Cache system and adding any other caching application or CDN services usually do more harm than good. In that regards for us to take a more closer look I suggest you to create a staging site. Please make sure that it does not has Godaddy cache, Cloudflare and any other plugin active other then Pro Theme and The Grid Plugin site.

To create a staging site, you can take a look at following article.

Thanks.

Hello,

Please find new staging site link on the secure note.
There should be no Cloudflare on the staging site, but just in case I paused it too.
I call GoDaddy to deactivate the caching system but is builtin and there is no option to turn it off.
All plugins are deactivated, except The Grid, and running the Pro Theme.

How do you reset the permalink?

Hi There @VGonzaloMartinez

Thank you for providing information. I have investigated this issue on my local test server and I see that the issue is related PHP v7.2.x. I would suggest you to switch to PHP 7.1.x to resolve or avoid this issue.

In the meantime, I will submit this to our issue tracker for further review.

Thanks!

Thanks,

  • Switching to PHP 7.1.x will resolve the 404 on the media Categories & Tags.
  • But it continues to show BLANCK PAGES on the media library page and the images are NOT showing up. How can I get this to show the images? As Google is indexing them and will show these pages on the results.

Hi There @VGonzaloMartinez

Upon testing, I see that your Media Library is showing all the images.

I have also checked your individual images randomly and it’s loading fine as well.

Make sure to clear your browser cache as well before testing. Further, you can also re-generate your permalink settings to reset your .htaccess file. To do that, head over to Settings -> Permalinks area, then select the option postname and save changes.

Hope that helps.

Sorry, I meant to write:

Hi,

I tried this on my test sites and I was able to replicate the issue. I also have tried it with the default wordpress theme and the issue persist. I will forward this issue to the plugin developer for review.

Thanks

Hey @VGonzaloMartinez,

Sorry for the confusion here. WordPress does not really have the Media Categories and Media Tags out of the box. Those Terms are added by The Grid and their purpose is for filtering and not for viewing. Deactivating The Grid is giving you a 404 because those Terms are deactivated with The Grid.

I will ask Darshana some more details about the relation of the PHP version with this.

Regarding your request to remove photos, do you mean all the images in this thread? I’ll delete the screenshots by my colleague. You can edit your posts and remove your screenshots.

If you mean remove images from your site, regretfully, we cannot do that as that is not a part of our product support. Please delete your images manually in the Media Library. I’m not sure why Google would index an image that is not loaded in a page.

Thanks.
